5K Fun Run/Walk
Start window = 11:00am
This will be untimed so bring your own watch. We thought it was better to give money to the food pantries then to the timing company. This course will have one water hole at the halfway point and of course the cookout afterwards. Enjoy running along the length of Blackhawk Lake and of course up a couple of hills.
Route

Family Route - 15 mile
Start window = 3:00pm to 3:30pm
Take a short trip out of the park with the family. Don’t worry these are quiet roads and safe for the kids. There is one rather steep climb on the route but there is a nice valley before you start and a great view once you reach the top. Also it gives you and your family a great chance to bond on a challenge you complete together.
Route

Early 50k
Start window = 8:15am to 8:45am
Short and hilly. Start with the long distance riders but get back and still find time to do something else. Maybe the 5K Run and late 50K Ride? With a water & food stop on this route you can finish this ride even if you are just pulling the bike out of the closet. It may not be your best time but hey, you are outside riding your bike!
Route

Late 50K
Start window = 11:15am to 11:45am
Also short and hilly. Start late and catch up with the 150K riders in the afternoon. A nice ride when it is warmed up, with a few hills to talk about afterwards. Again with a water & food stop on this route you can finish this ride even if you are just pulling the bike out of the closet.
Route

75K
Start window = 9:45am to 10:15am
This route is a compromise, start late and skip some of the climbing. About the right distance if you have been spinning in the basement all winter, especially this early in the season. This route meets up with the 100K route at the first rest stop, with fresher legs you should be able to keep pace with the 100k Riders from this point on (if you want to).
Route

100K
Start window = 9:15am to 9:45am
The metric century route is a great test, especially this early in the season. This route is the base route that all others either shortcut or veer off of. This route allows riders to see a meet people riding the longer or shorter routes possibly multiple times in a day. It is heavily supported with food and water stops every 13 to 18 miles.
Route

150K (100 mile) close to 10,000 feet of climbing!
Start window = 7:45am to 8:15am
No this is sick; are you crazy? You cannot be in this good of shape already, can you? This route follows the 100K veering off only to climb hills. You will be climbing all day on this route. Have fun. With all the support along the way you should be able to handle it, if not we will pick you up; no worries.

Course marking, maps and cues
You will receive a map at packet pick up. It will be an 8.5x11, three panel folded map with routes on one side and cues on the other. The actual maps can be found here. The course will be very well marked, with map color coordinated arrows in spray chalk. There will be at least two markings before each turn and at least one confirmation after each corner. Stop signs will have a single mark at the Stop sign.

No chip timing
Chip timing is very expensive and this is still a small event. For now we are either focusing our revenues on giving to the community or giving you an experience that you will tell others about.

Cut-off times to be aware of
In order to insure that we get all riders off the course (especially the 100 mile distance) before nightfall, the following cut-off times will be enforced. All riders should be back and off the course by 5:30 pm 4/28/2012. Depending on the distance you are riding, there are up to seven cut-off times that you will need to meet. If you insist on proceeding on the route beyond these cutoff times, you must show that you have night safety equipment, surrender your chip, bib number, and agree to disassociate yourself from the event.

Please see here for the cut-off times pertinent to your distance.

If you have special needs, you can prepare a packet
If you don’t see what you want or need in the list above, you can prepare individual special needs bags to be sent out to the various rest stops. Just put your stuff into a ziplock bag and label it with your name and the rest stop where you would like to pick it up. There will be a drop box for each rest stop that morning at the start.

Sending a piece of clothing back to the venue
If you want to have us bring something back from a venue (like a jacket, arm warmers, or leg warmers), ask a volunteer at the stop for a gallon sized Ziploc bag and a sharpie. Put your stuff in the bag, write your name and rider number on the bag and drop it in the bin. If you are done with your special needs bag and want to pick it up at the finish, drop it in the basket too. Remember in some cases you could get to Highland well before your items arrive.

What if I need a ride back to the start?
There will be drivers dedicated to bringing riders back to the start. They will begin running at 8:00 AM and will make regular stops at each rest stop. If you need a ride, talk to the volunteers at the rest stop. Please be aware that it may take 30 minutes or more for a vehicle to get to you. Please relax and enjoy talking to the local volunteers!

Support vehicles will be on course. They will be carrying tools, tubes, and pumps. They can also carry you to the nearest stop, or finish if necessary.

Changing my distance. Can I do that on course?
Absolutely! You may choose to ride more or less depending on how the day is going for you. At the finish, you'll hand in you timing chip and declare your distance ridden. The split points and cut-off times are detailed above. Please ride within your ability. If you would like to downgrade to a shorter distance, that's no problem - decide out on the course. Maybe you are in phenomenal shape this early in the season and you might want to stretch it out to 150K. Fine with us.

People volunteering at this event
They are volunteer groups who make this event possible, and support the local food pantries throughout the year. They live on these roads and come out on their own time to help. They deserve a hearty thank you. Please smile and say "Thank you!" a lot.

If your bike breaks down
Please come with your bike ready to ride. If you have a breakdown on the course, flag down one of our many roving support vehicles. They will be carrying a basic tool kit, tubes, pumps, and Co2. If you your issue cannot be solved on the roadside, a support vehicle can shuttle you and your bike back to the start or your vehicle. Between now and the event will are going to try and secure a mechanic to be available the day of the event.

Tri-bikes and aero bars allowed?
Yes indeed. Tri bikes and aero bars are allowed. For your own safety though, please stay out of the aero position and hold tight on the bull horns when riding in packs or negotiating the many tricky downhills on this course.

Suggested bike setup for the terrain
The hills here are short and steep. Some hills hit 20+%. Having some low gears can be a very nice thing. This of course, is a personal choice depending on your riding style and strength. But if you're asking, here are a few suggestions. Compact cranks (35x50) are great. Triple cranks are even better (30x39x53). If you're running a standard crank (39x53), you may want to consider a 27T or greater low gear in back. Some folks even run a MTB cassette in back (up to 34T) with a long cage derailleur! If you have ridden in the Horrible Hilly, Dairyland Dare, Quadru-peddle, or Potosi’s Great River Ride you know what you are getting into.

Obey the rules of the road
This is not a closed course. You will be sharing the road with motorists, farm implements, horses, and other cyclists. Please ride no more than two abreast and go to single file when necessary to allow faster vehicles to pass (it’s the law). Stay to the right at all times and do not cross left of center especially on blind corners where oncoming traffic cannot be seen. These roads are beautiful, but aging. Be aware that there may be broken pavement in places, bumps and debris to negotiate. Be aware that wildlife (deer, squirrels, rabbits, turkeys, cranes, and many others) that can jump out at any moment. Our courses are on many county and town roads with light traffic but still be careful.

You are an adult so please hold it
NO. All of the world is not your toilet. Riders urinating at the roadside are one of the biggest complaints from other event organizers in the area. Lets set a good example for 2012.

First aid kits available for minor problems
There will be well stocked 1st aid kits at each rest stop. Here's what we'll have available. Each support vehicle will also have a very basic 1st aid kit. We've got you covered for headaches and the basic scrapes and bruises. If you need emergency help, dial 911.

Post ride meal
The post ride meal will be served from 11:00AM until 8:30PM and will consist of traditional cookout items (Spaghetti, Garlic Bread and Salad). Add to this various deserts, soft drinks.

Can I get a meal for my wife/child/partner?
Certainly. Extra meals can be purchased for $5.

Quick post shower
The Highland Fire Department right next to the church is opening their doors to let you get cleaned up.

WiFi?
Sorry, none available at this time
